Job Summary:
The Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for implementing and maintaining BCNET’s multiplatform physical and virtual servers, appliances, and firewalls. This role ensures that BCNET’s infrastructure complies with information security best practices in coordination with BCNET’s cybersecurity standards, while utilizing server management tools to monitor system performance and establish performance baselines.
The Senior Systems Administrator is also responsible for maintaining and verifying the integrity of BCNET’s infrastructure backups. This position collaborates with the Network Services, Client Services, and Shared Systems & Technology teams as needed and ensures all work is accurately documented using helpdesk and change management platforms.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Working as a member of the IT team, provides second and third level operational support to ensure the stability and service levels of the BCNET server infrastructure.
- Assesses server infrastructure problems and develops solutions and implementation plans for resolutions with vendor equipment or software suppliers and maintains a peer technical expertise liaison with vendors and suppliers.
- Advises and makes recommendations to the technical life cycle planning of the BCNET server infrastructure and its effects on network services.
- Monitors server infrastructure activity and connectivity, troubleshoots, diagnoses and resolves server infrastructure problems;
- Patches and maintains the security integrity of servers.
- Employs technical expertise and represents BCNET and Network Services, Client Services, Shared Systems and Technology in developing workflows and processes to be built in TeamDynamix.
- Utilizes existing toolsets to perform server or appliance installations, troubleshooting and documentation tasks and security procedures.
- Implements best practices, standards, procedures and quality objectives across the infrastructure and platforms.
- Works independently to see operational projects to completion and works collaboratively with peers and team members to meet objectives.
- Maintains appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools.
- Occasionally required to provide after-hours on-call support on a rotational basis and be available off-hours to work on emergency server infrastructure problems, maintenance, or project activities.
Qualifications and Skills:
Required:
- A technology diploma/degree and 6-8 years of progressive experience in administering Linux systems, experience with Windows system is an asset.
- Have experience in scripting and command-line tools in Linux and Windows using administrative languages such as Python, Powershell and BASH scripting.
- Have and show competence with OpenLDAP, Active Directory, Radius, DHCP and DNS.
- Strong VMware virtualization skills
- Have experience in working in an environment requiring robust Change Control processes and procedures.
- Be able to monitor performance and troubleshoot alerts using commercial, open-source, and locally developed monitoring tools.
- Good understanding of automation (i.e. Ansible, Puppet, Chef) tools
- Know the fundamentals of IT security, hardening practices, and security management tools
- Have experience working with and managing Veeam back up systems.
Desired:
- Have experience with system failure analysis and recovery. Ensuring system consistency and integrity.
- Have a good understanding of Database systems (i.e. Mysql, PostgreSQL)
- Good knowledge of LAMP and IIS configuration
- Have experience in effectively presenting technical solutions to customers
- Familiarity with benchmarks such as CIS
- Working knowledge of SSO, MFA and Federation systems (i.e. Shibboleth, ADFS)
Assets:
- Familiarity with Jira, Confluence and TeamDynamix applications.
- Administering with Microsoft 365 intune environment
- Experience working within the higher education
- Microsoft Windows automation facilities (i.e. PowerShell, DSC)
- Experience with setup and maintenance of firewalls (i.e. Palo Alto Networks, FortiGate)

Compensation
$91,800.00 - $102,000.00 per year
