Systems Administrator I

Description

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, the Systems Administrator I is responsible for the maintenance and support of BCNET endpoints including operating system and application patching. The role also assists with patching and supporting Windows and Linux servers used to deliver BCNET services. Working closely with BCNET’s cybersecurity team, the Systems Administrator I helps ensure appropriate security practices are in place for assigned infrastructure.

This role uses and implements server and endpoint management tools to monitor systems and establish baseline performance metrics. The Systems Administrator I supports the development and improvement of IT service workflows and ticketing processes, maintains accurate asset inventories, collaborates with other BCNET technology teams to deliver high-quality services, and documents processes, procedures, and operational work using approved tools and systems.
 

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Working with the CTO and as a member of the IT team, provide first and second-level operational support to ensure the stability  and availability of BCNET’s server and endpoint infrastructure;
  • Monitor server infrastructure activity and connectivity; troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve issues related to desktop, laptop, printers, ticketing platforms, video conferencing systems and other endpoints ;
  • Assess endpoint and system issues and assist in developing solutions and implementation plans. Provide input and recommendations for lifecycle planning of BCNET desktops, laptops, servers, printers, video conferencing equipment, and other endpoint solutions.;
  • Contribute technical expertise to the development of workflows and service processes within TeamDynamix and related systems. Utilize existing toolsets to perform server or appliance installations, troubleshooting and documentation tasks;
  • Develop and maintain documentation, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), technical processes, and records of work performed using the IT ticketing and change management systems.
  • Implement and follow best practices, established standards, procedures and quality objectives across supported infrastructure and platforms;
  • Maintain professional designations and stay current with emerging technologies, tools, and best practices.
  • May be required, on an infrequent or exceptional basis, to provide off-hours support for emergency infrastructure needs.

Qualifications and Skills:

Must
  • Technology diploma or degree with 2–3 years of progressive experience administering Windows systems
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft endpoint management tools, including Microsoft Intune.
  • Strong working knowledge of Linux systems, including administration, troubleshooting, and patching.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft 365 services, including user and device management.
  • Experience with Active Directory administration.
  • Practical experience using PowerShell and command-line tools to administer Windows systems and automate routine tasks.
  • Experience  working in  environments with formal Change Control processes and procedures.
  • Ability  to monitor system performance and respond to alerts using approved monitoring tools
  • Working familiarity with Confluence for documentation and Moodle for system support and administration.
Desired
  • Experience supporting Windows and macOS endpoints.
  • Understanding of IT security fundamentals, system hardening practices, and security management tools. 
  • Microsoft Windows automation facilities (i.e. PowerShell, DSC)
  • Experience with system failure analysis, recovery and maintaining  system consistency and integrity.
  • Basic understanding of Database systems (i.e. Mysql, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server)
  • Ability to clearly present technical solutions and recommendations to internal customers and stakeholders.
Assets
  • Have to experience with LDAP, Radius, DHCP, DNS    
  • Experience with Windows automation tools and scripting frameworks.[EL2] Experience working within the higher education

Compensation

$64,000.00 - $75,300.00 per year
